My Photos - Mission Zone Conference 10/27/08

A Mission is usually split up into a number of Zones.  Some missions will have as many as 5 or 6 zones.  This zone represents a geographic area within the mission field.  All of the Missionaries that are serve in a particular Zone will get together at least 3 or 4 times a year to have a Zone Conference.  The Zone Conference is a time to get together to meet other missionaries in that Zone, catch up with companions you had before, receive instruction from the Mission President, sometimes a general authority from the Church will participate as well.  Generally the Zone Conference is a very uplifting and motivating time for the missionaries.

This past week Devin L. had his first Zone Conference on the Banks of the Susquehanna River where "Joseph and Oliver went into the woods and prayed for guidance on the subject of baptism. In reply, the resurrected John the Baptist visited them on May 15, 1829, and ordained them to the Aaronic Priesthood. He then commanded Joseph and Oliver to baptize each other in the nearby Susquehanna River."

To have this Mission Zone Conference at such a historical and significant spot for the church and for the world was truly a special experience for Devin L.  I'm sure what he felt will be something he will remember for the rest of his life.

I have a few links to the Church website that give a few details about this site and the significance behind it.  You'll notice that one of the pictures Devin L. took is from the same spot as another taken that is on the church website.  The only difference is the season it was taken.

  • Downstream by Melvin Leavitt (New Era Article June 1987) This is an article about 3 boys that live in the area of this site.  They spent a day to clear an area so a baptism could be performed in the river.  The article gives some of the history and the feelings of the area.

  • Joseph Smith Historic Sites: This will tell you more about this historic area.  Notice the picture on the main page is the same picture that Devin L. took above.  It's just a different time of year.  Just a beautiful area I'm sure.

These are the grounds... ...of the Homesite of... ...Isaac and Elizabeth Hale. Leading out to the river... ...you walk through the trees...
...and then the river.... Here the Elders and Sisters gathered around to listen to the Mission President. Looking up the river... ...you can see the hills surrounding... ...the area with so many trees.
