My Letters Home: December 20, 2009 - Talk

December 20, 2009

Before we came to this earth, we lived with our heavenly parents.  They loved us and wanted the best for us.  They loved us so much that they gave us "mission calls."  That call was to come to earth in a certain place, at a certain time.  We were so excited!

I would like to share a story that has blessed by life and the work on my mission here on earth.

"I had a dream that I was in the Pre-mortal existence and was awaiting my call to come to Earth.  I was filled with such an excitement and joy!  In the dream I was talking with one of my friends.  He was a very dear friend and I felt a special closeness to him, though I have never met him in this life yet.  As we talked, a messenger came and gave me a letter.  I knew it was my call to go to Earth.  In great excitement, my friend and I opened the letter.  I gave it to him to read aloud.  The letter said, "you have been called to earth in a special time and to a special land.  You will be born into the true church and you will have the priesthood of God in your home.  You will be raised with many advantages and many blessings.  You will go to Earth in the United States of America.

My friend and I rejoiced as we read my call.  Then the messenger returned.  This time he had a letter for my friend.  We knew it was his call for him to come to Earth.  My friend gave me his letter to ready.  The letter said, "You have been called to go to earth.  You will not be raised in the true Church, many hardships will attend your life.  You will be born in a land with limited freedoms and opportunities."

We wept, my friend and I, as we read each of our calls.  Then my dear friend looked at me with tears in his eyes and said, "When I am down on earth you in your choice land and me in mine, my friend come and find me."  With tears in my own eyes and I said, "I will stay worthy to serve and find you to embrace you in the waters of our Redeemer."

Brothers and Sisters, I have found my friends.  It has been the best of joy that has come into my life as a missionary.  This church is true, it has to be, it is too wonderful.  I'm so grateful for the knowledge and power that we get to share to the children of our loving Heavenly Father.  It is hard sometimes, but it is supposed to be.  Through our trials in this life we are able to increase our faith and help each other along the way.  Because of Jesus Christ it is possible to go back with our friends to our heavenly family.  Let us continue to find our friends this Christmas season.  We promised that we would!

In the name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

Love,

Elder Holmes

This past Sunday in Sacrament Meeting they read letters from each of the missionaries from our Ward.  You didn't know who the letter was from until the end.  We were in tears by the time we heard that this was Devin L.'s letter.  It was a very moving talk.  The story in Devin L.'s talk is an inspirational story shared in 1974 by a missionary who was going on a mission to Costa Rica.  It is a favorite story among missionaries as they go out to find their friends.
