May 10, 2009 It's tradition that the Elders are allowed to call home twice a year, Christmas and Mother's Day. We were looking forward to this call all week. Only problem is we didn't know when he would be calling. Since it was on Sunday we figured it would probably be sometime after he went to church and then just call from the Church Building. At right about 9:30 am the phone rang and the area code 717 came up, that's Pennsylvania calling. I answered and then got the instruction to just call him back at the number he was calling from. For the next 50 minutes Angie and I talked on the phone with him. We let Adam talk for a little bit and even play his electric guitar for Devin L. We found out a little bit more about the area that he just came from. Devin L. really had a difficult time of it. we felt so bad that he was having such a hard time of it. Most of the missionaries that have served in the Millersburg area have been very lazy. I think they sent Devin L. there to see what the area had. With Devin L. working so hard I think they found out that the area just doesn't have much in the way of prospects right now. With that Devin L. is very happy about his new area. The apartment they are in has all of the nice amenities, microwave, washer, dryer, and decent furniture. He said that the weather has really warmed up and is very humid. It doesn't matter if you stand in the shade or not, it's still warm. A new concept for him since he grew up in the dry heat of California. He asked for another short sleeve shirt. He's going to be sending home his memory card with more pictures on it in the next week or so. We'll see what videos he has to offer this time. We laughed about some of the stupid videos he's sent home, especially cleaning the bathroom with all of the bleach. I asked Devin L. what he learned most of all during the last 6 months. He thought about it for a minute and then replied, "Faith. It takes great faith to endure all of the yelling, name calling, and swearing." I asked Devin L. about the fact that his mission was combining with the Pittsburg, PA Mission. He didn't really know much more than that. He said it was just announced a bit ago and that's all they've told him so far. It will be interesting to see if he gets to go to any of the areas in Pittsburg. His current Mission President we'll be heading home June 1st. He will miss him as Devin L. has really enjoyed President Pugh and his wife. He said that Sister Pugh is a "ray of sunshine." Shortly after that I told Devin L. how proud we are of him and his continued desire to work hard and server the Lord. I told him that we pray for him every night and we miss him very much. With that I shared my love for him and said goodbye. I hung up and let his mother have the rest of the time thinking they would talk for another 10 minutes or so. An hour and 10 minutes later she hung up having had her fill of talking with her son. It's hard to believe that 8 months has now come and gone with Devin L. out there in the mission field. We'll get to talk with him two more times and then he'll be home. Christmas is just around the corner... |
