October 1, 2008 Dear Brother and Sister Holmes, I am pleased to inform you that your son, Elder Holmes, has arrived safely in the Pennsylvania Harrisburg Mission. Sister Pugh and I were delighted to welcome Elder Holmes. We are happy to have him and have great confidence that he will be a great missionary. As is usually the case with new missionaries, Elder Holmes has spent some time in our mission home getting acquainted and receiving additional instruction. After prayerful consideration, we have assigned him to labor with one of our best missionaries. We are convinced that the first mission companion Elder Holmes has will be a crucial one, and we have done everything possible to see that he gets off to a good start. Please feel free to contact me if ever a problem arises that you feel needs instant attention. My calling is to help Elder Holmes be a successful and happy missionary and to help prepare him for a successful life after his mission. We can assure you that we will do all in our power to look after his welfare. May we make the following suggestions regarding your communication with Elder Holmes? Write him every week, making your letters encouraging and optimistic. Show genuine interest in his daily activities and especially in his accomplishments and success. In addition, missionaries are instructed not to call home, except on Mother's Day and Christmas. This saves money and also helps our missionaries concentrate on the Lord's work. We request that visits and telephone calls from home not be made without special permission from the mission president. With the system that the Church has developed, your missionary should receive enough money to live on from the mission. I encourage you to send no addition money, unless there is a need for some major expenditure that is outside of normal missionary activity. We will work to help him budget his expenses. You might be interest to know that I will be in personal contact with Elder Holmes at least every six weeks. Zone and/or District Leaders will be in contact with him daily. I will also review a written report from Elder Holmes each week. We will do everything we can to keep your missionary productive and successful because we care about his welfare. Thank you for sending Elder Holmes to us. May our Heavenly Father's blessings be with you and your family during this wonderful time of Elder Holmes' full-time service to the Lord. Sincerely, Donald E. Pugh
Devin L. now has a companion and will be heading out to the Mission Field. We look forward to hearing about where he will be living. |
