My Letters Home: September 29, 2008 - Phone Call

September 29, 2008

Devin L. was able to call us from the Salt Lake City, Utah Airport as he waited to board his flight to Pennsylvania.  We were anticipating his phone call this morning, maybe a little too much as we laid there in bed waiting for the phone to ring since about 4:30 am. Finally about 6:30 am the phone rang. It was great to hear the excitement in his voice. He talked about looking forward to getting to the mission field, the fun he was having with the companions that he had been in the MTC with and was now traveling with, and how he was just having a great time. He shared with us who has been writing him letters and hopes to hear from more friends and family from home.

I found out a little bit more about the reason he sang in the choir. His companion wanted to sing in it and since there wasn't much else to do Devin L. decided what the heck I'll do it too. He was glad that he was able to do it since he got so much more out of it than he thought he would.

We found out that Devin was in the same building and on the same floor that his father was while he was at the MTC 22 years ago. His father had sent a picture of himself standing in the doorway to his room at the MTC saying 'Hi.' The room number is above the doorway. Devin L. realized that he was near where his father had stayed, building 14M floor 4. So Devin L. took a picture of himself in his doorway as well. Devin L. has had a great time in the MTC and has "learned more in the last 3 weeks about the church than he did his whole life."  I think that is an exaggeration but it just goes to show that he has learned much more than he thought he knew.

His Mother talked with him for a bit as well and told him about the package that we had sent and what was in it.  She shared how Adam has been sleeping in his bed some nights and how we love and miss him.

Before you know it the phone was beeping for more money, it was time to say goodbye. It wasn't as hard this time to say goodbye, we knew he was doing great and looking forward to the mission field. We shared our love with him and wished him well knowing he had a great journey ahead of him.

Stay tuned for more letters and soon pictures as well!
