My Letters Home: September 23, 2008 - Letter

September 23, 2008

To my family,

A lot has happened this past week.  Going to the temple was an awesome experience.  I was able to take some pictures and can burn them to a CD.  I will be getting the CD this Thursday and will mail it then.  They said it's not a good idea to mail memory cards, for whatever reason, so if we do, we'll have to get a small package.  This past Sunday was so awesome, we had Richard G. Hinckley come for our devotional.  He talked about the 9 B's of companionship.  It felt like I was at priesthood conference again.  We were then able to watch "Joseph Smith the prophet of the Restoration."  It was a very good movie.  About an hour and half.  Just another movie of his life, but also showed as a child to when he was killed.  I pretty much cried every 10 minutes, thanks for that dad!  On Monday, yesterday, my companion and I taught Lesson 2 in preach my gospel, was very cool to talk about the pre-earth life and after.  I used the Doctor's Office to compare the spirit world, "We are there and waiting to be judged," also like you've done something to upset your mother, like not doing what she asked you the first time!  And having to wait for Dad to come home....hehe

After the lesson we walked out to get feedback and as we did 10 of the General Authorities were there!  Including Richard G. Hinckley and I got to shake his hand!  I didn't even know what to say, he told me, "The Lord has blessed you Elder Holmes, Remember that."

It felt so cool to actually talk to a General Authority face to face, his spirit was so strong it might have well been our father in heaven.

These past few days have been so awesome, the food is good and I like to eat!

So how has life been without me?  I heard you were able to sell the car, total lost money but whatever least you sold it.  Yea that $3 rebate was something I mailed in for that radiator fluid.

It's nice to sit in front of the MTC where they have the benches, so many people have motorcycles!  And some day I will!  Yeeeaaahhhh!

Well I hope your not mission me to much.  I'm having a good time here.  Oh yeah, I'm leaving on the 29th, I will be at the airport at 6:00 am and can call my family or friends if I want to, so pick up the phone!

I'll probably call home and chat, but not for too long.  Any letters I get will go to Pennsylvania, FYI, Love ya all!

Devin L.

PS - Tell the Young Men to study all of Chapter 3 (from "Preach my Gospel"), that is what missionaries teach!  If they have that done, it will be so much easier!

All of us in the district are getting along well.  And year you were right Dad, we have one that you just have to wonder "why are you here?"  But other than him it's awesome how we are already close friends.

The Elders from my District:

  • Elder Scott: My Companion from Utah, played basketball, track, and pole-vaulted in high school.  It's easy to be yourself around him, but still gets what needs to be done.
  • Elder Fisher: Very funny, has a lot of great stories of the stupid stuff he did in high school.  It's great to talk with him at the end of the day.
  • Elder Trantner: Rode dirt bikes and track in high school.  Also very fun to talk to, always has jokes.
  • Elder Tibbits: From Idaho, lived on a cow and potato farm.  He's really small, 5' 5", loveable kind of guy.
  • Elder Bradsher: From Tennessee, very funn, laid back type of Elder, reminds me a lot of Aaron Robertson.
  • Elder Meadows: has the personality of a child, but freaking hilarious, ca, do good impersonations of almost anyone.
  • Elder Shaw: Always has something stupid to say.
  • Elder Bateman: Always has a huge smile on his face, very fun to be around.  I don't think I've ever seen him un-happy.
  • Elder Davis: He's from Sacramento!  He also thinks that we may be related.  His great grandma was a sister of Lamar, I don't know the details but it's kinda cool.

For those that don't know a General Authority would be one of our Church Leaders from Salt Lake City.  Many time they will come to the Missionary Training Center for special talks.  It's a real privilege to meet them.
